Using their signature performance style, Panoramic Theatre, this unique production of Moliere’s shorter comedies hearkens back to the 17th century playwright’s roots in the Commedia dell’Arte. The characters of Playing Molière, including cuckolded husbands, sneaky servants, demanding fathers, and quick-witted lovers, have inspired an entire generation of physical comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and the Marx Brothers.
It Could Happen To You is a bemused and soulful valentine to romance. The music, ranging from American Songbook standards to brilliant and quirky songs by current indie songwriters, trains a knowing eye on the ever-complicated, ever-simple story of what we go through when love happens to us. It stars singer/songwriter, pianist, and two-time Tony nominee Bob Stillman, joined by three genre-blending vocalists (Rachel Bay Jones, Martha Redbone, and Bryce Ryness) and three musicians (Sean Harkness, guitar; Danny Weller, bass; Tim McLafferty, drums), combining talents to span styles from cool jazz to bluegrass to old-school soul and rock. Songwriters include Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Burke & Van Heusen, Laura Nyro, Ben Folds, Joni Mitchell, Stephin Merritt, and Stevie Wonder. It Could Happen To You is a celebration of love in all its confusing, redeeming glory.
