Girls Just Wanna Have Fund$ is the result of a collaboration among the talented members of the Women’s Project Labs for playwrights, directors, and producers. Lab members were asked to create site-specific work on the theme of women and wealth (or the lack thereof). It is not only a theme befitting the venue that has “financial” it its name, but also it is a topic that hits home for Lab members, who are committed to careers in the professional theater, where women still garner only 20% of production opportunities nationwide.
Word of Mouth was a multi-disciplinary festival which explored the intrinsic nature between language and performance. Using the World Financial Center as a blank canvas, four artists/organizations were invited to activate the space through the use of movement, recitation, music, spoken-word and performance. Taking place over four days in various locations throughout the World Financial Center, all these new works were written in response to the confluence of thousands of people from an immensely diverse spectrum in one complex. Lisa D’Amour and Katie Pearl presented the site specific Bird Eye Blue Print; Women’s Project presented new short works about the relationship between women and wealth (or the lack thereof) in Girls Just Wanna Have Fund$; Poets House presented a children’s program; and teen poets from Urban Word NYC staged a spoken-word event with special guests CocoRosie.
