New York, NY (March 3, 2010) – The bustling World Financial Center will be transformed into Elsinore Castle next month when it hosts a free production of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare that will inhabit the sprawling venue as its set.

From April 1-18, New York Classical Theatre will perform William Shakespeare’s tragedy in their signature panoramic staging style, with the audience being drawn into Hamlet’s world as they follow the actors down staircases and around mezzanines throughout the entire World Financial Center complex. Viewers are invited to bring cushions to sit on as they watch the moody Dane brood against the luxurious marble backdrop of a modern-day castle built to celebrate the power and magnificence of New York’s financial community.

New York, NY (March 3, 2010) – The restaurants of the World Financial Center will dish out signature dishes and preview new menu items for less than $5 at the ever-popular EAT: World Financial Center Restaurant Showcase from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm on Friday, March 12.

Just in time for lunch, the center’s diverse collection of fourteen eateries will serve up sweet and savory treats for $1-5, including Au Mandarin’s famous pork dumplings, P.J. Clarke’s always popular mini-cheeseburgers, Starbucks’ Hot Chocolate, and Financier’s Blueberry Panna Cotta. See below for full menu.

Live musical accompaniment will be provided by All Night Cookin’, a four-piece bluegrass band whose mix of raw energy and virtuosity have made them a favorite among the city’s rock fans and bluegrass traditionalists alike.

As part of a residency with arts>World Financial Center, New York Classical Theatre will be using an empty storefront at One New York Plaza as the production studio for their 2010 season. Throughout March, members of the public can watch the company prepare for their April 1–18 staging of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, getting a peek behind the scenes via an open house and lunch-time talks with the creative staff. From March 2-25, visitors can also catch public rehearsals amid the hustle and bustle of the World Financial Center, whose 3.5-acre street and lobby levels will be the set for the sprawling production.

Kentridge’s latest animation features score by longtime collaborator Philip Miller performed live by Ensemble ∏; screenings coincide with Kentridge works at Metropolitan Opera and MOMA

New York, NY (February 22, 2010) – Acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge will dominate New York City’s arts calendar in the coming months with works at MOMA and the Metropolitan Opera, but there's only one major venue where audiences can see his work for free.

On March 21st and 22nd, arts>World Financial Center will screen Sounds from the Black Box, Kentridge’s most recent animation work and the latest in his long series of collaborations with South African composer Philip Miller.

A follow-up to and expansion of Kentridge and Miller's renowned “9 Drawings for Projection” project, Sounds from the Black Box combines the artist's stunning animations with scores by Miller, which will be performed live by the New York City-based Ensemble ∏.

The screenings coincide with a major Kentridge exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (Feb 24–March 17) and a Kentridge-directed-and-designed production of Shostakovich’s The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera (March 5–25). (more)

arts>World Financial Center will join the global celebration of the life and music of Chopin with 200 hours of free piano performances by such top virtuosos as Christopher O’Riley, Claire Huangci, Vassily Primakov, and the winner of next month’s 8th National Chopin Piano Competition in Miami.

Rare screenings of three early films by Japan’s master filmmaker to feature NY premieres of scores by Lori Goldston, Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb

New York, NY (January 8, 2010) – arts>World Financial Center, New York City’s leading year-round showcase for free visual and performing arts, will present free screenings of three silent films by the celebrated Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, featuring live scores by a trio of prominent modern American composers.

Passing Fancy (1932), Woman of Tokyo (1933), and That Night’s Wife (1930), rarely-screened films from the director's early career, will be shown February 10th-12th in the World Financial Center’s glass-vaulted Winter Garden. All screenings are free.

New York, NY (December 21, 2009) – In celebration of Black History Month, arts>World Financial Center and New York Opera Society (NYOS) will co-present two free concerts showcasing the music of George Gershwin and Scott Joplin, featuring renowned soprano Christina Clark and baritone Kenneth Overton.

Marking the debut of NYOS at the Winter Garden, the concerts will take place on Friday, February 5th with an evening performance at 7:00pm (running time: 75 minutes) and a lunchtime performance featuring selected highlights at 12:30pm (running time: 45 minutes).

New York, NY (December 21, 2009) – arts>World Financial Center, New York City’s leading year-round showcase for free visual and performing arts, will present a free performance of the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra on January 16, 2010, featuring special guest Neil Gaiman narrating Peter and the Wolf.

In a rare New York appearance, the Newbery Award winner and author of Coraline will give new life to Sergei Prokofiev's children's classic as part of “Musical Tales and Adventures: Peter And The Wolf & And Bold To Fall Withal - Henry Hudson in the New World,” an evening of music by the Lower Manhattan-based chamber orchestra set in the World Financial Center’s glass-vaulted Winter Garden.

The concert will also feature acclaimed Broadway tenor Jason Danieley in And Bold To Fall Withal - Henry Hudson in the New World, a world premiere composition by Knickerbocker founder and conductor Gary S. Fagin. Commissioned by The Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, the work celebrates the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's sail into New York Harbor.
Giant Cords Woven From New Yorkers’ Clothes To Be Centerpiece off Free Performances By Artist Mk Guth At World Financial Center, January 9-12

New York, NY (December 21, 2009)- Cementing its position as New York City’s leading year-round showcase for free performing and visual arts, arts>World Financial Center today announced an ambitious lineup for its 2010 season.

With three residencies, including its first-ever extended-run theatrical production, arts>World Financial Center’s 22nd season furthers the organization’s role in supporting established and emerging artists as a part of an eclectic roster of new work and world premieres.

The residencies include New York Classical Theatre’s staging of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, performed throughout the sprawling World Financial Center, as well as multidisciplinary artist MK Guth’s three-part working exhibition and performance using objects woven from clothes and fabric donated by New Yorkers.
