World Financial Center goes Argentine Tango --
Argentinean Bandoneónist and Bandleader Héctor Del Curto Transforms the
World Financial Center Winter Garden into a Grand Ballroom of Tango
And Evening of Dancing to the Music of the Eternal Tango Orchestra
Free Dance Lessons Too! Thursday, May 21
NEW YORK - They say it takes two to Tango. No argument there. But it takes the World Financial Center to present a romantic and free evening of Argentine Tango music and dancing under palm trees and a barrel-vaulted glass ceiling.
Arts > World Financial Center will present
Héctor Del Curto and his Eternal Tango Orchestra and transform the Winter Garden into the largest Argentine Tango ballroom in New York on the spring evening of Thursday, May 21.
The festivities begin at 6:00pm in the World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, with DJ dance sets by NYC Tango luminary Richard Lipkin and a guided Argentine Tango lesson from instructor Jennifer Wesnousky.
At 7:00pm, it's the main event: Argentinean bandoneónist and bandleader Héctor Del Curto and his ten-piece Eternal Tango Orchestra take the stage before a dance floor filled with hundreds of Argentine Tango-dancing couples.
The Eternal Tango Orchestra has been reviving and captivating the great tradition of the orquesta tipica (traditional tango orchestra) since 2003 and its conductor, Argentinean bandoneónist Héctor Del Curto, has captivated audiences around the world as a soloist and chamber musician. Mr. Del Curto has shared the stage with the world–renowned tango legends Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Pugliese, pianist Pablo Ziegler, clarinetist Paquito D´Rivera, ballet dancer Julio Bocca, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C.), Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra and Teatro Colón Ballet among many others.
Mr. Del Curto won the title of "Best Bandoneón Player under 25" when he was only 17. This led Osvaldo Pugliese to put him in his legendary orchestra, making him the youngest bandoneonist in that orchestra's history. As conductor, Mr. Del Curto directed the spectacular Broadway show Forever Tango before founding the Eternal Tango Orchestra.
"For over two decades, we've presented exceptional music, art, theater and film in the World Financial Center Winter Garden, making it the center of the downtown arts scene," said Debra Simon, Artistic Director of Arts World Financial Center.
Arts World Financial Center is sponsored by American Express, Battery Park City Authority, Brookfield Properties and Merrill Lynch.
