New York, NY (January 8, 2010) – arts>World Financial Center, New York City’s leading year-round showcase for free visual and performing arts, will present free screenings of three silent films by the celebrated Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, featuring live scores by a trio of prominent modern American composers.

Passing Fancy(1932), Woman of Tokyo(1933), and That Night’s Wife(1930), rarely-screened films from the director's early career, will be shown February 10th-12th in the World Financial Center’s glass-vaulted Winter Garden. All screenings are free.

Curated and hosted by WNYC radio host John Schaefer, the screenings will showcase new scores by Black Cat Orchestra cellist Lori Goldston, composer and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, and the iconoclastic pop composer Robin Holcomb. Each composer has assembled an all-star ensemble to perform their scores. Schaefer, whose influential “New Sounds” program was called "the #1 radio show for the Global Village" by Billboard magazine, has partnered with arts>World Financial Center for more than ten years in finding novel ways to bring modern music to the Winter Garden.

Now in its 22nd season, arts>World Financial Center is the East Coast’s largest presenter of free, year-round performing and visual arts. Other season highlights include a weeklong celebration of Chopin’s 200th birthday; Sounds from the Black Box, featuring animations by South African artist William Kentridge paired with new scores by South African composer Philip Miller; and a three-week run of New York Classical Theatre’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark to be performed throughout nearly 3.5 acres of the sprawling World Financial Center.

“Ozu’s silent films have a delicate tranquility that perfectly complements the mood of the Winter Garden on a quiet winter evening,” said Debra Simon, Artistic Director of arts>World Financial Center. “John Schaefer, a true connoisseur of contemporary music, has put together a seamless series that offers a unique pairing of some of America’s most exciting composers with the subtle charms of Japan’s master filmmaker.”
