New York’s Largest Free Summer Arts Festival Kicks Off June 22; Festival Highlights Include Bang on a Can Marathon, Beth Orton, YACHT, 4th of July with Dan Zanes and Friends, Burning Spear, and Movies on the Elevated Acre


New York, NY – May 10, 2010 – Offering something for everyone, the ninth annual River To River® Festival today unveiled a stellar line-up of free music, dance, and cultural events that firmly establishes Lower Manhattan as the city’s summer arts capital.

Named “one of the city’s most compelling summer series” by The New York Times, the River To River Festival is New York’s largest free summer arts festival. Founded in 2002 to help revitalize Lower Manhattan after September 11th, the festival draws hundreds of thousands of people each year to Downtown’s spectacular waterfront. The events span venues from the World Financial Center and Rockefeller Park on the Hudson River to Castle Clinton National Monument, Wagner Park, and Battery Park at Manhattan’s tip to The Elevated Acre and The Seaport on the East River.

The 2010 River To River Festival presents an almost daily schedule of free events, from flagship annual events like The Bang on a Can Marathon, Children’s Day at The Seaport, The 4th of July Concert in Battery Park, and Movies on the Elevated Acre to showcases for hotly-tipped artists like YACHT, Tiempo Libre, and choreographer Paul-André Fortier.

“The River To River Festival reflects the liveliness and diversity that has always made downtown Manhattan a vital part of the city's creative life,” said Robin Schatell, Executive Director of The River To River Festival. “We’re proud to once again offer a wildly eclectic program of outstanding, world-class entertainment for free.”

Presented by American Express, the 2010 River To River Festival’s schedule highlights include:

• Hailed as “the country's most provocative and consistently entertaining new-music event” by the Village Voice, the annual Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center Winter Garden draws huge crowds for a 12-hour marathon of mind-boggling, genre-bending music. This year’s line-up includes the highly-anticipated U.S. premiere of Fausto Romitelli’s Professor Bad Trip; a Bang on a Can All-Stars’ premiere with Mira Calix; and Balinese Gamelan. (June 27)

• With tall ships as the backdrop, The Seaport continues to showcase rising and established indie music stars with Bear in Heaven (July 9), Thee Oh Sees (July 16), Free Energy and Best Coast (July 23), Avi Buffalo (July 30), and YACHT (August 6). The Seaport’ kicks-off its season on July 2 with Yellow Fever and Woven Bones.

• The early evening concert series at Rockefeller Park, complete with stunning Hudson River sunset, includes: Steve Hackett and Renaissance (June 23rd), Beth Orton (June 30), Poets House’s celebration of the poetry and music of Haiti starring L’Orchestre Septentrional (July 7), Haiti's oldest big band orchestra, Jimmy Webb and Martin Rivas (July 14), and Burning Spear (July 21)

• The annual 4th of July concert at Battery Park expands this year with music for all ages, including Dan Zanes and Friends performing Broadway classics, acclaimed Columbian band La Cumbiamba eNeYé! , and a participatory parade of 76 Trombones. The Broadway2Battery theme continues at Castle Clinton National Monument with a trio of concerts that includes Antibalas (July 22), the band behind the Broadway hit FELA!

• One of the city’s best outdoor screening series returns with Movie Nights On The Elevated Acre, showcasing classic New York features paired with indie shorts screened on an open-air rooftop plaza overlooking the East River. The lineup includes four films united around the Broadway2Battery theme: Broadway Danny Rose (July 29), Auntie Mame (August 5), The Country Girl (August 12), and The Muppets Take Manhattan (August 19).

• The annual Children’s Day at the Seaport culminates with the spectacular Target Fireworks, featuring a special performance by Apples in Stereo accompanied by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. During the day, families can enjoy performances by Gordon from Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina, and more, while meeting their favorite storybook characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, and Madeline. (June 26)

The Joyce Theater co-presents 30 x 30 (July 16-August 19), in which acclaimed choreographer Paul-André Fortier performs a 30-minute dance in front of One New York Plaza at the same time of day for 30 consecutive days.

• LMCC’s Sitelines 2010 presents new site-specific work at a variety of downtown venues by today’s most exciting choreographers, including Phil Soltanoff (July 31 and August 1, Governor’s Island), Yoshiko Chuma & the School of Hard Knocks (July 7 and 8, LentSpace), and Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus’s LoVid (August 9–12, One Chase Manhattan Plaza).

Tiempo Libre, one of the most exciting young Latin bands, performs for two nights with a different special guest each night. (World Financial Center Winter Garden, August 4; Rockefeller Park, August 5)

• Wagner Park, with its view of the Statue of Liberty, hosts its wildly popular Latin music series with Plena Libre (July 28), and Nino Segarra and His Orchestra (August 11).

Laura Peterson Choreography: Everyone
Sitelines Presented by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

Laura Peterson Choreography is a New York City-based dance company that creates highly physical and dynamic pieces with a deep sense of design and detail. Inspired by mass games, flash mobs, swarms and flocks, everyone explores the visual elements of choreography with a large cast, changing locations, costumes and sounds. Also June 23-25. 12:30pm, The Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street, between Broad and William Streets and 2:30pm in Battery Park. Free.

Eroica Trio
Summer Stars: Bright New Talent in Classical Music and Beyond
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

The most sought-after trio in the world, the Grammy®-nominated Eroica Trio thrills audiences with flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm and sensual elegance. Whether playing the great standards of the piano trio repertoire or daring contemporary works, the three young women who make up this celebrated ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. 7pm. National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Teen Exhibition
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

This exhibition showcases video, animation, writing, photography, painting, sculpture, fashion and graphic design by teenage artists who have earned national recognition through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. These talented teenagers follow in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Philip Pearlstein, Mel Bochner, Sylvia Plath, Tom Otterness and Zac Posen, who all won Awards in their youth. Erik Guzman Weather Beacon
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

Weather Beacon is an oracle for the digital age. Merging Wi-Fi technology, industrial engineering, movement and light, this kinetic sculpture invites the public to connect to both physical and invisible surroundings. Weather Beacon receives information from the Internet and emits a code of flashing lights, forecasting the weather for a curious public. Sculpture operates 24 hours a day, though December 31. World Financial Center Plaza, 220 Vesey Street. Free.

Wednesday, June 23

Sound Bites Lunchtime Series
Presented by The Seaport

Go local! Kick off another season of the Fulton Stall Market with lunchtime concerts. Grab a snack from one of the market's farmers and purveyors, then head over to the Seaport stage for a set from some of New York's freshest bands -- playing in rawer form than you may be used to. Shows include The Beets (June 23) and the Toys and Tiny Instruments Band (June 30). Noon. South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

American Ballroom Theater Dancing Classrooms
Colors of the Rainbow Team Match
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

Culminating this year’s Dancing Classrooms program, talented 5th and 8th grade dancers from New York City public schools compete in this city-wide competition for the grand prize as they Fox Trot, Merengue, Rumba, Swing and Tango their way to the gold. 5th graders, 3–4:30pm; 8th graders, 6–7:30pm., World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, Free.

Renaissance and Steve Hackett
Presented by Battery Park City Authority

Art-rock ensemble Renaissance, led by vocalist Annie Haslam, perfected a synthesis of folk pop and symphonic influence on their classic albums Prologue, Turn of the Cards, and the remade Scheherazade. Steve Hackett, best know as the Genesis guitarist, continues to shine as a star performer and composer in his own right with an original and extraordinary acoustic and electric playing style. 7pm, Rockefeller Park, River Terrace and Warren Street. Children's Day & Fireworks with The Apples in stereo
Presented by The Seaport

This beloved event returns for its 18th year with performances by Gordon from Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina and more. Kids can meet their favorite storybook characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George and Madeline. In the evening don't miss The Apples in Stereo and Brooklyn Youth Chorus as part of the Summer Stars series, plus the spectacular Target Fireworks. Noon, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Bang on a Can Marathon

Bang on a Can returns with its incomparable 12-hour super-mix of genre-defying music from around the corner and globe. Beth Orton

English singer/songwriter Beth Orton brilliantly combines the passionate beauty of acoustic folk with the electronic beats of trip-hop, creating a fresh, distinct fusion of roots and rhythm. YellowFever and Woven Bones

The Seaport kicks off their summer music series by digging deep into the heart of Texas with two of Austin's most exciting new bands. This night goes straight to the heart of all that is young and dirty, fuzzed up and blues-punked, with a golden smattering of surf. 6pm, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Dan Zanes Jam & Jubilee: Broadway2Battery
The Battery 4th of July Concert and Family Festival
Presented by Alliance for Downtown New York

Celebrate the Fourth of July family style with Grammy®-Award-winning artist Dan Zanes and his incredible array of musical friends. Spend the day dancing to the infectious rhythms of Columbian band La Cumbiamba eNeYe, marching with the parade of 76 Trombones, and singing along to Dan’s own brand of Broadway classics like you’ve never heard them before! Left On Red

Left of Red simply means, "to take your own direction.” Featuring vocalist/guitarist Liah Alonso and Kelly Halloran on vocals and violin, this duo began in the subway stations of New York City and released their self-titled debut album in 2009. 12:30pm, Zuccotti Park, Free.

Poets House Celebrates the Poetry and Music of Haiti
with special guest L'Orchestre Septentrional
Presented by Battery Park City Authority

L'Orchestre Septentrional, Haiti’s oldest big band orchestra, has grown from a group of seven to a band of 18, since their inception in 1948. Their boule du feu (ball of fire) rhythms and Cuban flavor never fail to bring everyone to the dance floor. 7pm, Rockefeller Park, River Terrace and Warren Street. Free.

Yoshiko Chuma & the School of Hard Knocks: A-C-E ONE
Sitelines Presented by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

Renowned choreographer Yoshiko Chuma creates a full-length new work fusing live music, dance, text, and performance into a unique multidisciplinary work. This world-premiere is set to a newly commissioned score from downtown composer John King. Chuma brings her inimitable adventurous sensibility together with a team of remarkable collaborators to create a signature spectacle. EAT: World Financial Center Restaurant Showcase

Leave the lunchbox at home and get your fill at the Winter Garden. The World Financial Center’s restaurants serve up signature items for $1–$5 including Au Mandarin’s famous pork dumplings, PJ Clarke’s popular mini-cheeseburgers, Devon & Blakely’s delicious soup, irresistible desserts from Patisserie, and much more! Alice Farley Dance Theater: HellGate Love Letter

Bessie Award-winning choreographer/designer Alice Farley creates an imaginary landscape that combines costuming, circus arts, dance and puppetry. Titled after the Old Dutch name for the East River Strait, Hellegat ("bright passage" or "gate to Hell"), this ode to New York's waterfront comes alive with the words of Frederico Garcia Lorca and Walt Whitman, and the music of Peter Garland. Madeleine Peyroux: Broadway2Battery

As noted by NPR, Madeleine Peyroux became famous, in part, for putting idiosyncratic touch on time-tested standards. With a repertoire that extends from personal, original songs to a breadth of rare classics from a bygone era, Madeleine Peyroux’s standards are anything but standard. Tickets will be distributed two per person outside Castle Clinton on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:00pm on the day of the show. 7pm, Battery Park at State Street. Free.

Friday, July 9

Bear in Heaven with Zola Jesus
Seaport Music

Bear in Heaven's self-described psychedelic, minimalist, pop represents endless hours of stream-of-consciousness, conceived and recorded by Jon Philpot, Adam Wills, Sadek Bazaraa, and Joe Stickney. All Southern transplants, the band now makes its home in Brooklyn and produces music described as "a powerful, functional mix of This Heat, 70s soft rock, early Genesis, and oddly, later Pink Floyd." With special guest Zola Jesus. 6pm, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Rochester City Ballet
Presented by Pace University

Discover the Rochester City Ballet, acclaimed as one of the best regional ballet companies in the United States, making its New York City premiere. RCB’s repertoire features award-winning contemporary works as well as classic story ballets. Third Rail Projects: The Drifting Encyclopedia
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

The Drifting Encyclopedia is an assemblage of American oddities, scientific and historical ephemera, questionable accounts and implausible representations thereof. Part Victorian cabinet of curiosities, part roadside attraction, this art installation houses exhibits that echo themes of unlikely connections and contemplates the actual, illusory and anomalous nature of love. Created in correspondence to Undercurrents & Exchange, the performance series takes place in the Winter Garden. July 12 -- September 3. Third Rail Projects: Undercurrents & Exchange
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

Undercurrents & Exchange is a rumination on the conundrum of love, infatuation and connection in modern America, manifested in a series of lunch-hour performances. Each day artists present a new dance grappling with improbable relationships and unearthing the hidden, interpersonal undercurrents daily routine. These daily dances are episodic and will culminate on July 23 when performed together to reveal their underlying meaning. Created in correspondence with The Drifting Encyclopedia art exhibition in the WFC Courtyard Gallery. July 12 -16 and July 19 -23 at Noon-12:10pm and repeated 1–1:10pm. Deganit Shemy: 2 kilos sea
Sitelines Presented by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

Critically acclaimed Israeli choreographer Deganit Shemy, known for her aggressively physical work, brings five dancers together in the close quarters of the courtyard at John Street United Methodist Church to explore the misinterpretations that occur in a nanosecond, exposing the fragility of time, of relationships and of accepting. The Dan Martin/Nick Russo Duo
Presented by Arts Brookfield Properties

Bassist Dan Martin has played with Marc Ribot, Bruce Barth, Makoto Ozone and Lenny Pickett. He is the founder of Dan Martin Music, providing jazz groups for corporate and nonprofit clients. Guitarist Nick Russo has worked with Jimmy McGriff, Teddy Charles and Sonny Dallas, among others. His album RO features Mark Turner, Miles Griffith and Ari Hoenig. 12:30pm, Zuccotti Park, Broadway between Cedar and Liberty Streets. Free.

Jimmy Webb with Martin Rivas

Singer and pianist Jimmy Webb is one of the few artists of the 1960s to achieve stardom and professional acclaim not performing, but composing and producing hits such as Wichita Lineman, Up, Up and Away, and MacArthur Park. Rising NYC singer/songwriter/guitarist Martin Rivas, of Serious Pilgram, has found acclaim opening for Aimee Mann, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Joan Jett. 7pm, Rockefeller Park, River Terrace and Warren Street. Emmet Cohen
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

At 20, jazz piano prodigy Emmet Cohen plays with the maturity and confidence of a seasoned veteran. With astonishing technique and an innovative harmonic palate, Emmet shares a deep musical bond with his audience. Duncan Sheik: Broadway2Battery

Tony and Grammy® Award-winning composer and songwriter Duncan Sheik has navigated both the Great White Way and the world of pop and indie rock. Sheik's achievements include Tony Awards for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album for Spring Awakening. His latest release, Whisper House, hones his integrated voice – it is as much pop as it is a musical theater composition. Paul–André Fortier: Solo 30x30
Presented by The Joyce Theater and Arts Brookfield Properties

Solo 30x30 is a 30-minute dance performance presented at the same location, at the same time for 30 consecutive days. Created by choreographer and performer Paul-André Fortier, one of the leading figures in Canadian contemporary dance, this minimalist work is stripped of the stage’s artifice and grounded in the urban décor to form a bond between performer, audience and place. July 16 - August 14, Noon-12:30pm. One New York Plaza, Water Street between Whitehall and Broad Streets. Free.

Thee Oh Sees with Golden Triangle and So Cow
Seaport Music

Thee Oh Sees’ psychedelic sound weaves "AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes" to create "gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, [and] mighty drums." Brooklyn’s Golden Triangle, a band of three girls and three boys, plays loud and spooky, reverb-drenched distorto girl group pop, mixing male/female vocals with gnarly surf guitar jangle. So Cow tops off this great line-up. 6pm, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Summer Stock NYC 2010 at Pace University: An Evening of Broadway Blockbusters. This 70-minute event will feature some of the biggest hits from classic musicals and showstoppers currently on Broadway, performed by young actors and famous guest artists. The evening will include songs such as New York, New York and numbers from the best-selling shows currently on Broadway. 5pm, Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts, Pace University, 3 Spruce Street. Gimagua
Presented by Arts Brookfield Properties

Using the MTA’s Music Under New York program as a launch pad for their NYC career, these twins from Colombia also perform their Rumba Flamenco and Afro-Cuban stylings at private and corporate events. The duo has appeared on several local and national TV shows, and recently recorded music for the Broadway hit, El Zorro, The Masked Musical. 12:30pm, Zuccotti Park, Broadway between Cedar and Liberty Streets. Free.

Burning Spear
Presented by Battery Park City Authority

One of the most brilliant and respected roots artists in Jamaica's history, Burning Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) has recorded a host of classic dread records over the years. Part Rastafarian preacher, part black historian, Burning Spear brilliantly illuminates Rastafarianism in song. 7pm, Rockefeller Park, River Terrace and Warren Street. Free.

KJ Denhert
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

KJ Denhert has been making audiences laugh, dance and cry for over three decades. Her special blend of urban folk and jazz has earned her multiple Independent Music Awards and in 2009 she was named one of Jazz.com’s top female vocalists. Her pathos, originality and impeccable musicianship make KJ one of a kind, not to be missed. 12:30pm, World Financial Center Plaza, 220 Vesey Street. Broadway2Battery: Antibalas

Antibalas - Spanish for “bulletproof” - is a high-energy, highly celebrated Afrobeat orchestra from Brooklyn. The band anchors this year’s Broadway hit FELA! with their musical direction and energetic instrumentalists, arranging and performing the music of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and originals alike. Tickets will be distributed two per person outside Castle Clinton on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5pm on the day of the show. 7pm, Battery Park, State Street and Battery Place. Free.

Friday, July 23

Free Energy and Best Coast with Loose Limbs
Seaport Music

Free Energy, dubbed "one of the best live bands in America," by SPIN, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, delivers "guitar-heavy and totally unironic AM-rock sound" reminiscent of Tom Petty and Mick Jagger. Best Coast, among the most promising new indie acts of 2010, draws its sound from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s aesthetic of The Beach Boys and The Everly Brothers. Seaport Music Record’s own Loose Limbs starts the night off. 6pm, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Jason Green
Presented by Arts Brookfield Properties

Hailing from Cleveland Ohio, this veteran guitarist has been playing blues and jazz professionally around the world since the age of 17. After spending six years on tour, he relocated to NYC in 2004 and has worked with many popular local acts, including fronting his own band, Jason Green and the Labor of Love. 12:30pm, Zuccotti Park, Broadway between Cedar and Liberty Streets. Plena Libre
Presented by Battery Park City Authority

Fifteen years and thirteen albums later, this fine-tuned 12-piece Puerto Rican based ensemble is still captivating audiences with their high energy rhythms. Plena Libre brilliantly combines a swinging rhythm section, horns, vocals, and dance to create an electrifying stage presentation that is both profoundly Puerto Rican and universally appealing. 7pm, Wagner Park, Battery Place and West Street. Chris Velan

Told in flashbacks by a group of comedians over lunch at the Carnegie Deli, Woody Allen's Oscar-nominated 1984 film, co-starring Mia Farrow, follows hapless talent agent "Broadway" Danny Rose (Allen) as he gets dragged into a love triangle involving the mob.

Avi Buffalo, the adopted name of nineteen year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, began as a solo act, but now includes the talented Rebecca Coleman (keyboards, vocals), Arin Fazio (bass) and Sheridan Riley (drums). The Guardian (UK) dubbed the band's self-titled debut album, “one of 2010's most startlingly lovable albums.” Recalling Neil Young at his most fragile and plaintive, and Thurston Moore at his most resolved and vital, Chad VanGaalen will make this night on the pier complete. 6pm, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. In SIT, STAND, WALK, LIE DOWN… award winning theater director Phil Soltanoff creates a promenade performance on Governors Island. Performed by a mass of people using movements derived from the simplest gestural vocabulary, SIT, STAND, WALK, LIE DOWN… aims to reveal the qualities of a particular space by painting it with choreographed movement. 3:30pm. In this new work, Bessie Award-winning choreographer Christopher Williams brings his signature imagination and fantastic style to Irish Faerie lore. These 6th and 7th century adventures, or Imramma, tell the tales of saints, heroes, and troubled men set adrift in boats with no oars; encountering strange, uncharted magical lands with curious inhabitants. YACHT, formed in 2002 by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who claim Portland and Marfa, Texas as homes, is best known for combining music with live visual shamanistic, video, audio and PowerPoint performance. Sitelines Presented by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

Interdisciplinary artist duo LoVid leads a team of performers and audience members through an obstacle course, carrying electronic components from one side to another to build an electronic musical instrument that produces live sound. Beginning at a low volume with minimal movement, the performance progresses to a crescendo of density and sound. Also August 10-12. 12:30pm, One Chase Manhattan Plaza. Free.
